Occasionally I am presented with this scenerio....
A customer wants to purchase his own transmission "online" where he found a supplier that is priced much lower then anyone in town. He then wants us to install this low cost transmission.... the goal being saving money. Here is the reality based on years of seeing this scenerio play out.....
The customer will go online and find a million transmissions in all manner of condition available. Used, reconditioned, rebuilt, factory remanufactured, upgraded, etc. etc.
All offering the world in terms of warranty.
All at an (initially) lower price.
And all you need is a credit card.
And what do you get?
A different transmission then the one you currently have in your car or truck.
Hopefully it's the right one
Hopefully in serviceable condition (working right)
Hopefully durable (will last as long as you want)
Hopefully the warranty is genuine (no hoops to jump through)
Hopefully installed by another stranger correctly.
What is the savings? You probably will have to make a security or "core" deposit. And there will be freight. Transmissions are very heavy and cost a lot to ship. $250 shipping costs aren't unusual. Even more the further away the seller is from the buyer. And how long will it take to get it after you order it?
Lets say the trans fits, and is the correct one for the car.
Will it be installed correctly by someone qualified with experience and the integrity to do the job right?
What other work needs to be done to make it work correctly?
What if you have a warranty claim?
Who's going to pay?
How much will "they" pay? Enough to cover the installing shop's normal charges? Are you expected to pay the shop yourself then "they" promise to pay you back.?
How long a wait for a replacement under warranty?
Will it be done right this time?
How much time will you be without your vehicle?
How many faces have to be involved to solve your transportation problem? Sounds like
3 or 4 maybe more on the net!
Or just us. We helped you make the appointment, correctly diagnosed the problem, then fixed the problem and smiled at you when you handed over your hard earned money and made written and verbal promises that will be kept without reservation.
One thing to remember when dealing with a supplier out of your area, any problems that arise always take more time, are more difficult to deal with and cost more to resolve. And companies that are a long way from thier customers don't have much incentive to take care of thier customers when they aren't selling something that customer needs to buy from them every week or month.
In short, I don't recommend purchasing a transmission online because the risks far outweigh the possible reward of saving a few dollars. That's my official position on the subject.
